Nobody could copy it. Everybody mistakes it for linen. Both are kind of the point.
Every brand has an origin story. Ours is woven into the cloth — literally. Before there was UTKU, there was a fabric so distinctive that people couldn’t find it anywhere else. They still can’t.
Wait, Is This Linen?
We get it constantly. It’s light, it’s textured, it has that easy, lived-in look — so people clock it as linen and move on. Then they actually touch it.
It’s softer. Buttery, honestly. And here’s the trait it borrows from linen: the more you wear it, the softer it gets. It doesn’t wear out — it wears in, until it feels like it’s been yours for years.
It’s All In The Twist
Most cotton is woven with straight, calm yarns. Ours isn’t. The warp — the threads running the length of the fabric — is spun with an extreme twist, wound tight like a coiled spring.
The moment the fabric comes off the loom, those threads do what tightly-wound things do: they release. As they relax back toward their original state, they pull the cloth into that soft, textured crinkle the fabric is named for. It isn’t printed, pressed, or finished on afterward — it’s structural. Baked into the weave, which is exactly why it never washes out.
The Twist
More twist in the warp means more crinkle. Most cotton sits low on this scale. Ours is off the charts — entirely on purpose.

The Fabric Nobody Could Copy
About forty years ago, a textile company in Ecuador called La Internacional was producing some of the finest cotton in the country. Their signature was this twisting technique — and plenty of people tried to replicate it. Nobody quite could.
One of their engineers recommended the construction to our family as a way to make something genuinely exclusive: a fabric unlike anything else on the Ecuadorian market. Customers felt the difference the second they touched it. It simply didn’t feel like anything else they could buy.

Woven For One Family
Four decades later, that same crinkle cotton is still one of our signature fabrics — and it’s still made the same way. Today it’s woven exclusively for us, in-house at La Fábrica.
Not licensed. Not pulled from a supplier’s catalogue. Made specifically for our family and our collections, carrying forward a textile tradition that’s been part of our story for generations.
Crinkled By Design
Good news: this might be the lowest-maintenance fabric you’ll ever own. It’s already textured, so it shrugs off wrinkles, springs back into shape on its own, and gets stuffed in a bag without holding a grudge.
Wash it cool, hang it to dry, and let the crinkle do its thing — it only gets better with age. Finished, like everything we make, with tagua nut buttons carved in Ecuador.
